Torchwood: No, I’m not moaning this time

I actually thought the newest couple of Torchwood episodes (‘Something Borrowed’ and the one after) were pretty good. (Note: if you haven’t watched the next episode, this may contain spoilers…)

‘Something borrowed’ did have a few moments which made me think “Hmmmm”, but for the most part they kept it pretty interesting all the way through. This could be because I always find “shape-shifter” stories a little intense, possibly because I’m always reminded a little of “The Thing”.

The next episode (in which a bunch of crazy travelling show people who have somehow escaped from film) wasn’t quite as good — i.e., absolutely no explanation of what was happening was given at all — and the suspense wasn’t done quite as well as Something Borrowed, but in general I think they pulled it off.

All in all, I’m glad to see Torchwood return to the more entertaining style of the first part of the series, after the weak previous couple of episodes!

Hey Phill, was watching Torchwood last night with Matthew who mentioned that for once you hadn’t slated the episode on your blog. So, hey, I thought I’d check out your blog because I’ve been neglecting to do so recently. So this is me checking out your blog – and you know what, I think we’re gonna disagree on Torchwood. ๐Ÿ™‚

“Something Borrowed” – fun, funny and with a couple of surprises. (Personal favourite quote: Ianto about Owen – “I was brought up never to speak ill of the dead.”) However, nothing particuarly special, but a nice change from the previous darker episodes.

“A Day In The Death” – my new favourite for the season. Not without it’s problems, but breath taking at times, a fantastic character study, and wonderful material for Burn to get his teeth into. (more on this soon on my blog)

“Dead Man Walking” – dark, disturbing, delightful. Again not without it’s flaws, but it’s with episodes like this that Owen has slowly gone from arrogant git to a troubled fully rounded (not perfect) character.

Anyway, I’ve got to go since I’m at work and my break is finishing…

  2. Hi A-M,

You’re disagreeing with me? GET OUT!!!

    Just kidding.

On reflection, “A Day in the Death” is much better than I first thought, I guess it was just a little coloured by watching “Dead Man Walking” – which I still think was not a good episode.

Anyway, I look forward to reading your thoughts on your bog at some point ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. “Anyway, I look forward to reading your thoughts on your bog at some point :-)”

You mean you’re gonna be printing out A-M’s blog to read? Save the tree’s and read it online!

I found your comments on “From Out Of The Rain” interesting – it was the same author who did the Fairies story and I think you had the same complaints… TBH I preferred the Fairies story compared to this one (this just seemed to lack a decent structure or suspense) which slightly disappointed me as it’s such a good concept – figures from black and white films coming alive – I think I would’ve handled it slightly different (might be a DA story there…)

Will have to see what the next few weeks bring – am just getting a bit fed up with the Bad guys attacking Owen and then losing interest… can we have something different please?

  4. Phill – can you edit the above so that the quote is formated correctly? :S

    A.

  5. Done ๐Ÿ˜‰

From Out of the Rain – one thing I did say to Phil during the episode was that the suspense didn’t really work, i.e. I didn’t really feel particularly on the edge of my seat, even at the points which I should have done. Still, it wasn’t badly done and I enjoyed it for what it was.

I guess one slightly worrying thing about Torchwood is that their stupidity and rashness have caused a lot of lives to be lost, i.e. with Doctor Who you know he’s always on the side of what is good. With Torchwood, they just do whatever they like and there’s no accountability for it. For example, when they bring back ‘Death’, twelve people died for absolutely no reason other than Captain Twat felt like using the magic glove.

Aaaanyway, if we didn’t have it there’d be nothing to rant about, happy days ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Thanks mate!

I wouldn’t say they were acting rashly – remember the Torchwood team are human not a almost ominiscent timelord… And remember that “Captain Twat” didn’t know what was going to happen when he used the glove – the “Death” creature seemed a nasty side effect (plus he did expect Owen to only be around a minute…)

  7. PS you got the wrong quote! This was supposed to be quoted:

“Anyway, I look forward to reading your thoughts on your bog at some point :-)”

then the bit that’s quoted was my comment on the quote… might just leave the tags next time… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Doh! Never mind.

How can you say Jack wasn’t acting rashly — he had NO IDEA what that glove would do! Given the record with the previous glove, it just seems inconceivable to me that Jack would do something so incredibly stupid for the sake of someone who … well, is Owen.

I don’t think he did expect Owen to be around for “just a minute” because I seem to remember him making a comment about not wanting another team member to die…

Anyway, I’m not arguing about Torchwood any more, it’s too ridiculous :p

  9. But what if Owen was right and he just wanted the Alien Mortuary code (which to be fair is fairly ridiculous anyway – why would only 1 person have the code… and didn’t they have a gadget that could pick locks?…) ๐Ÿ˜‰
