  • Why?!

I don’t know why, but for some reason solving one problem always seems to bring up others. I’ve managed to get PHP working with creating files on Linux – but now there’s a problem with the ordering of them, or something. On the main page, the posts come up in a funny order, and I don’t really know why!

Also I’m having trouble with the permissions on Crossring. Grrr…

That’s the way the wafer crumbles, as they say. Who ‘they’ are, I don’t know, I just assume that they work for the BBC (Big Brother Corporation). Have phun.

  • Safely back at home

Just a quick post to say that I’m safely back at home 🙂 I had a really good course, I think it’s going to be very useful to me. Not just with work — with a lot of different stuff. For example, I’ve just resynced post counts and join dates over at Crossring… now it’s just a matter of getting the content management system up there. Great fun…

  • Hello from London!

I am currently down in central London, on my training course (on a lunchbreak, just in case you think I’m actually writing this while meant to be working…). I haven’t got very much longer actually, so I’d better think about getting back soon.

It’s going well. I’m staying with Philippa’s parents, which I think was a good idea because I’m being well looked after!

The course started off a bit basic, but it seems to be getting harder now and actually it’s all useful because it’s good to start from the ground up by doing things the right way (as opposed to trying to fudge it).

Anyway, better get back to the course. Will update here sometime over the next few days probably…

  • Nothing much interesting

Well, nothing much interesting has happened over the past couple of days. At least, nothing noteworthy. It was Philippa’s birthday and we went out for a meal last night, which was cool 🙂

I’m doing a training course this week in central London, it’s at a place called Spring IT which is near Liverpool St Station. That should be good, although I feel a bit bad about leaving all the guys at my company because there aren’t many of them in this week! Ah well, that’s the way it goes.

Anyway, uh, I’d better be off now… got a train to catch to London. Laters…

  • 2000AD

Apologies for the cryptic title, but – remember how in 2000, everyone was talking about how we were all promised we’d be living in silver jumpsuits by the year 2000, and none of that had materialised?

Well, something might be about to materialise in the not-too-distant future: flying cars. I would imagine, with sod’s law being what it is, about the same time as cars that don’t pollute becoming econonically viable (I can’t imagine flying cars being eco-friendly to start off with at least…)

  • Why does it always take so long to set up?

I’m talking about Oracle’s software. There is ALWAYS something seemingly small and insignificant that goes wrong, but it ALWAYS takes ages to fix… ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!

Ah well, that’s the way it goes, I guess. Especially when you’re working with Linux (I like it, apart from the fact that I find it difficult sometimes because I’m not used to it.)

Um, not much else to say… just trying to bump the posts here a bit to test if my archiving system works (on the right hand menu, ‘February’ should appear soon…)

  • Hmmm

Well, it seems like I can use PHP OK on my Linux box, except for the fact that I can’t write any files… if anyone’s got any ideas as for permissions, let me know. I’ve tried setting chmod 777 html and chown phill:apache html but it hasn’t seemed to make much difference. So if anyone’s got any bright ideas, they’d be most welcome!

GRRRR!!! I’ve just received a bunch of spam emails. I seem to have been added to a spam mailing list and it’s VERY ANNOYING!!!

Anyway. I spent most of yesterday evening working on the new Crossring forums… they seem to be up and running OK now! Wow! Now it’s just a matter of working on the rest of the site… it never ends. I’m going to take a break, go and watch a film or something…

  • New hosts?

I might think about moving over to a new web host soon. OpenHosting have served me well, but they are a tad expensive… I’ve found a hosts called UH-Hosting, and they seem to be pretty cheap. The main thing is, MySQL databases – with OpenHosting you have to pay extra per year. Another option is WebFusion who are a bit more expensive then UH-Hosting, but I know someone else who uses them and they seem pretty good too.

If anyone else has any recommendations, send ’em in – I need PHP and MySQL basic, anything else is optional… (I’d run a server on my own PC, but to be honest I don’t want a PC running all the time at the moment).

  • A Good Situation?

Well, here’s a picture of a situation which I find wholly acceptable:

    My Desktop

Note, the Linux desktop in the background, but the Windows taskbar at the bottom and the Windows applications running… Ok, so it’d probably be better to run Linux primarily, but I don’t want to do that. Incidentally, Linux is running on my old computer (which doesn’t have a monitor, keyboard or mouse connected to it anymore) – I’m just connecting via a network connection.

    I like this situation 🙂

  • The Weekend

Ah, the good old customary “The Weekend” post. Not loads to say… on Friday, after work Philippa met me and we … um … stayed in during the evening. We watched “Swordfish”, it’s a good film. Then on Saturday afternoon we headed back to Colchester, and in the evening we went to the Anglican Chaplaincy Saturday Night SocialTM. It was a panto evening… I think everyone had a lot of fun, it was a good evening!

And on Sunday, I went to Fordham in the morning, and then in the afternoon I went back to Alex’s and we watched “Bill Bailey – Part Troll.”

And there’s not much else to say… I’m enjoying the new computer 🙂 And I’ve even managed to get it set up so that I can use my old computer using Cygwin/X. It’s good 🙂

Anyway, I think that’s just about it for now… later!
