Just a quick note to say that I have upgraded this blog to WordPress Version 2.1. I would list some of the new features and stuff here, but to be honest you might as well just visit that link and look at it for yourself! Suffice it to say that I think WordPress upgrades are always worthwhile, if for no other reason then to make sure you’ve got the latest security updates installed :-)
Just a quick update. I’ve actually managed to update the About section of this blog! I know that hardly anyone actually ever reads it, but at least it’s up to date now…
Update: I have also fixed the email script to deal with Email Injection. Not that I was really having problems with it, but you never know!
I’m getting really annoyed by the amount of comments spam that I’m getting. I usually have about one spambot on here a day, trying to post up adverts to sites for pharmaceuticals etc. I don’t know what kind of return they’re getting on spam, but it can’t be much – do people really buy stuff from dodgy companies who advertise using comments spam? If I ordered anything through them, I’d be worried that I’d wake up in a bath of ice with my liver missing or something like that…
Anyway, the upshot of all this is that if you find you post a comment and it doesn’t appear on the site, either (1) it’s because it’s being moderated, (2) I’ve set my spam filter to automatically delete posts with certain words in them :-)
The other thing to mention is, I have uploaded the photos I took last Saturday on Yahoo! Photos. You can find them on this page. I’ve decided to store them on Yahoo! rather than on here because there you get unlimited storage space, whereas here I’m paying for the storage and bandwidth! Sometimes you can see a “Download” button next to the photos, but in case you can’t and you want the originals of any of them please let me know.
Well, a couple of items of blog news, first about mine, and then about someone else’s! Firstly, this blog is now three years old! It started during my second year of university, (in February 2003), and kept going through the trials and tribulations of graduation, unemployment, employment, and (constantly) the boredom of the regular readers. By way of a mini-celebration I thought I’d post up an especially boring blog post (this one).
Aaaaanyway. The other news I had was that I got a mention on Max Barry’s Blog. I sent him an e-mail, and he mentioned it (very, very, briefly) in an update. I told you this was a boring blog post, didn’t I?
Ah well. All for now…
Would anyone find e-mail subscription to this blog a useful feature? The reason is, I found a subscription plugin the other day, and was toying with installing it. I would install it if I thought people would find it useful, but on reflection I think it’s perhaps a little unnecessary!
So, this is your chance: speak now or … email me at a later date if your circumstances change and you decide you do want subscription after all!
Anyway, if you do think you would find it useful, leave a comment on this post.
Well, it turns out that WordPress v2.0 has been released! Excellent. I upgraded to it just now, it took about half an hour. You probably won’t notice much difference in general, although I do apologise if anyone finds anything on the site that’s broken because of it!
Anyway. If you’re a WordPress user — check out the Blog Post. If you’re not a WordPress user — why not? Check it out anyway! :-) Most of the feature improvements seem to be behind the scenes, but the new admin section looks quite snazzy! Also there seems to be the option of signing up as a subscriber to the blog, which (if I’m correct in my assumption) means you’ll be able to get my blog by e-mail. Why you’d do that I don’t know, but still…
Well, I’d better get back to writing my lovely, lovely test plan… oh what incredibly joy! *ahem* As you were…
Well, I finally sent my e-mail of resignation to Zeth (managing editor of Crossring) yesterday. It was a sad moment, and one that marks the end of an era. I joined Crossring a few years ago as the web assistant, and have been looking after the site ever since!
I think one of the main reasons I have for leaving is the fact that I’m now working in the computer industry, and it’s just too much to do that and then come back home and work on a site. Working on a website that’s already set up is one thing, trying to build a site like Crossring (which involves quite a lot of work) is another.
Speaking of sites that are already built, however – I did agree to oversee the Fordham Church website. It’s using a Content Management System which was already set up… having said that, it doesn’t seem to like Linux / Firefox! I tried updating it yesterday and nothing happened. Ah well, c’est la vie…
I have updated the Open Source section of the site. Yes, I know, I’m very sad – I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night! Philippa and Luci have gone onto campus for karaoke which isn’t really my kind of thing… everyone else seems to be at the CU house party. So I’m stuck in on a Saturday night. Ah well, comme ci, comme ca.
I think I’ve got an almost fully-functional site now… the best thing about it is, a couple of the sections basically update themselves: one of the many good things about WordPress is the ability to categories your posts. For example, any posts that I have filed under ‘DJ Stuff’ I can link to from the DJ page, no need to have to update the page itself every time I post something DJing related… handy!
Anyway, that’s all for the time being.
Just a quick note to say that this blog and website is now published under a Creative Commons license. This means that you can do what you like with what I do here, provided that: (1) you don’t use any of it in a commercial work, or (2) you don’t modify it or create any derivative works. If you want to read the full text of what you’re allowed and not allowed to do, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “Some Rights Reserved” button.
The reason why I have changed to this? Well, one of the reasons I’m a fan of open-source software is that most of it is “free” as in “free speech”. The internet is probably one of the best things to have ever happened to free speech – that’s both a good and a bad thing, but in general (I think) good. Copyright is getting a bit creaky, in that I think these days it’s not really doing what it was supposed to do. It’s restricting creativity rather than encouraging it, and the people who benefit it aren’t necessarily the people who deserve it. Don’t get me wrong, I think Copyright is a good thing, but perhaps it needs to be re-examined for the 21st century!
And in the next blog post, Phill will try and see if he can include any more buzzwords than he did in this one…
Well, I’ve got the new design up and running. I think I’ve still got some work to do (‘some work’ will probably translate into ‘re-designing the whole thing from the ground up again – twice!’) but still. All I have to do now is add a photo gallery. I might put my ‘Open-Source’ page back as well.
I have to say I’m quite impressed with WordPress – it’s pretty flexible! I’ll have to have a good old browse of the plugin list at some point, see if there’s anything there I could use here…
