  • More on Open Source / Freeware

Well, here’s another treat for you: VLC Media Player… it’s a freeware media player for you 🙂 It’ll play all your standard stuff, as well as DVDs, VCDs etc…

And this I found on El Reg’s Windows Downloads Site, featuring a whole bunch of freeware and shareware stuff. So go and check it out! You might find some good stuff there 🙂

  • Good website for musicians…

Some of you may have heard of Project Gutenberg. Basically, it’s a place where classic literature is posted, for free — because the copyright has expired, it’s totally above board!

Anyway, I found a site like that, except for sheet music. Check out the Mutopia Project — there’s loads of good stuff on there! 🙂 Enough to keep me happy for a while…

  • A Tony, a Tony, oooooh I got a Tony…

Well well well, three holes in the ground. Apparently you can buy dolls of Tony Blair (scroll down a bit)! I would never have believed it… thanks to Zeth’s Blog for letting me know about it 🙂

  • The Weekend

I seem to do this every week! Make a post with a title “The Weekend”, or something similar. It could be to do with the apparent recurrence of weekends in the calendar 😉

Anyway. Yes, it’s been good. Saturday afternoon I went to Colchester, had lunch with Philippa, and then we went into town to do some Christmas shopping. Then, we went to Claremont Road for dinner, and then onto the chaplaincy Christmas party. It was good fun! Everyone had a good time. Apart from my piano playing, but you can’t have it all.

On Sunday, Philippa and I went round to Alex’s (but not the Claremont Road Alex, another Alex), and had lunch there. Then we went to campus in the afternoon, and helped set up for Dunamis. I was providing the sound — first time I’d done everything like that! But it went well, thanks God 😉 And the whole production was really good, all credit to Matthew for organising it (or at least, taking a large proportion of the organisational work…)

And I think that brings you up to date. Have phun…

  • Interesting plays, and things

Yesterday, I went to Colchester for the evening. Me, Philippa and Alex went to see a play called ‘Marat / Sade’. You can read the write-up on the Essex Arts Office website. It was… interesting. I have to say, I don’t mind things being weird provided that they’re making some kind of point, or being constructive. For example, I think “Fight Club” is a really weird film, but I really like it because I think it makes some very good points. I Heart Huckabees was similar, although it didn’t make points in the same way it caused you to at least think (in a positive way).

I just think Marat / Sade was just depressing, and not particularly constructive… But anyway. Then I came home, and went to work today, and this evening I watched a DVD (‘Airplane’). It’s a fun old life …

  • Why I Hate Christmas

You know, I really hate this time of year. Some people might find that rather strange, given that I’m a Christian, and after all – Christmas is about Christianity. Right?

Well, yes, this is true. But I don’t hate this time of year because of that. It’s because it’s so incredibly far from how it was supposed to be. As it’s getting late, I’ll just mention a couple of examples.

Firstly, Christmas is all about Christ. That much is obvious. I just find it so incredibly ironic that Christmas is probably the most stressful time of the year for many people (buying presents etc) — many people seem to get into debt and work themselves into a stress about it. And all this for the celebration of a man who once said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Jesus is the bringer of peace, not stress and chaos!

Another thing that annoys me leads on from that. What about peace, huh? People often quote at Christmas, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” You know, all that stuff about goodwill to all men. Well, (a) when do you see that at Christmas? All I see is frenzied consumerism; (b) that’s not really what it’s on about. This is: “… [talking about Jesus] For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”

Our peace comes first and foremost from our peace with God. If we have peace with God, we have peace with each other. Let’s not go around espousing pithy little “goodwill” messages (I just hate the superficiality, even hypocrisy, of people saying that) — instead, let’s take a deep, long look at our own lives and see how best we can make them peaceful, with God and with each other.

    And that’s enough for now!

  • Rise of the machines?!

It’s amazing what they can do with technology nowadays… well, not just technology. The Borg are coming!

  • Not much to say!

Good weekend. Foz’s party = good. Good to meet up with people I haven’t seen for a while. Staying with Philippa and her parents = good.

Home safely now. Work tomorrow. Sleep. Bye…

  • New records!

Well, I’ve finally got some new records for the first time in months! (Apart from the three I got in August). So, that’s good!

This weekend, I’m going down to London. One of my friends, Foz, is having a birthday party down there! Which I’m quite looking forward to 🙂 So I’ll be staying at Philippa’s house in Orpington… I may not get a chance to update this, so there’s no change there!

    All for now…

  • Blogger SUCKS!!!

Why is Blogger either always down, slow, or having trouble? — suddenly all my posts seem to have disappeared! I’m sure they’ll come back (I hope) but this is stupid!

I think I’m going to write my own system…
