  • Happy New Year!

Just wanted to echo just about everyone else in the ‘blogosphere’ this morning and wish you all a very happy new year! I hope 2011 brings you good things.

It’s funny thinking about 2011 for us – it could be the year that things all change, which is a bit scary but at the same time exciting. More on that later.

I just want to say thanks to Alex for the new years party last night. Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay very long due to reasons I won’t go into now – suffice it to say that we’re both fine and there’s nothing to worry about 🙂 In the end we got back home about 10:00 and watched the 2002 version of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, which was really funny.

  • The Chicken Shak Spy: Review

Over the summer and autumn, my friend Simon Lucas has been working hard on a novel, “The Chicken Shak Spy”. It was published in eBook format a few weeks ago, and I bought a copy and finished reading it a couple of days ago. I thought I’d write a blog post reviewing it anyway, and hope that this helps people when considering books to read next!

One thing I should mention: this review may contain minor spoilers, I’m not going to give away anything major but if you don’t want to know anything about the story before you begin… why are you reading this review? But, more generally, skip to the summary at the end…

So. The story is about a guy, Graham Chapman (no relation to the member of Monty Python), who works for his parents fried chicken delivery company. But he is also a spy. He works for a security firm, the Hunter Group, who are investigating a plot to kill the pope. I think the best thing to do is explain what worked for me and what didn’t.

    • This story definitely falls under the ‘pop fiction’ banner. It’s like an action film where you can turn your brain off and just enjoy it: I find quite a lot of old-school Bond films fall into this category for me. Don’t worry too much about the intricacies! You wouldn’t read The Chicken Skak Spy for its Shakespearean dialogue, but I found the plot to be pretty gripping. Particularly the second half – once it gets going I couldn’t put the book down!
    • On the subject of the plot, there were a few moments which I just couldn’t buy. For example, one person shooting about five or six security guards without them getting off a shot. Also some of the dialogue didn’t seem very natural. That said, see what I said earlier about action films.
    • I thought it was a really interesting premise about a spy who works for a fried chicken delivery firm – however it seemed that this was only peripheral to the rest of the plot (i.e. it only really gets mentioned at th beginning and the end). I’m hoping that this gets developed a bit more in subsequent novels.

Summary: despite a few minor niggles, I really got into the story. I think Simon’s strength as a writer is writing the plot and action elements of the story. This aspect of it kept me gripped right until the end. If you’re looking for something light and quite fast-paced to read, I can definitely recommend this book. It’s not Shakespeare, but it will keep you entertained!

  • Day 124: Sunset over Ipswich Docks

The sky was pretty much perfect this evening. I love the sun in this picture. The cranes in the foreground as well seemed quite appropriate somehow.

By the way, this is my first post after Christmas. I’ll post up a summary of how it all went soon, but allow me to say now – hope you all had a very happy Christmas and I wish you a prosperous and healthy new year 🙂

  • Happy Christmas!

Just a quick post to say happy Christmas to all my blog followers 🙂 I am with family at the moment, and will be for the rest of the week.

There will be no project 365 photos going up for a few days, but rest assured I will be taking photos and they will all go up soon 🙂

  • Day 121: Self-Portrait in a Vinyl

Bit of a weird photo today. I was looking around for things to take photos of, and I spotted a record I had lying around (many bonus points if you can name the record from what I’ve shown). I took a couple of photos, and really liked the reflection effect you get with them. So, I decided to do a self-portrait – my reflection in a record!

  • Pre Christmas stuff

Well it’s very nearly Christmas! I only have a couple of days left at work (well, two half-days really – tomorrow afternoon we have the Christmas meal, and the day after I think they usually let people go home in the afternoon.)

I thought I’d better post up a quick summary of what we’ve been doing over the past few days anyway! Last Friday we were at Emmanuel Church, Billericay for the annual ordinand’s evening. Apparently last year it was cancelled because of the snow, but this year it was fine. There was some snow but not enough to stop us getting there! We saw James and Tash, albeit briefly, and we also were able to speak to a few of the people I met at Audley End.

On Saturday we spent the morning doing a bit of shopping and various Christmas related chores (posting off cards, presents etc). In the afternoon we met up with Alex, Tom, Dan and Alison at the Castle (the pub, not the actual castle) for a few drinks, before heading on down to Sloppy Joe’s. By this time it had been snowing hard for a couple of hours – as we were going in to eat the traffic on the high street had been at a standstill for about half an hour! The restaurant itself was pretty empty, although as we left another group of people came in. I do feel quite sorry for restaurant and shop owners at the moment – so many people must cancel because of the weather, it must be quite disheartening!

Anyway, after that we went over to the Odd One Out for a few more drinks, and then back to Tom’s place to watch an episode or two of Father Ted. All in all, a good evening!

On Sunday we didn’t manage to get out to church because of the snow. Apparently the hill in Fordham was not in a fit state for driving, so we didn’t attempt it. We did, however, go round to Tim and Katie’s house (our home group leaders) for a get together, with Mike and Dani and Stepheny. We had brunch, and read a Bible passage together, and generally had a good time. We stayed there until about 2:30 and then headed back home. In the evening, Phil made it out to the carol service at Eight Ash Green – unfortunately I was feeling a bit rough so I stayed in and kept warm!

And I think that pretty much brings us up to date with what’s been going on. Nothing too exciting, but still! I don’t know what my updating will be like over the next couple of days so – if I don’t write a proper update before, I wish all of you a Happy Christmas 🙂 I do sometimes write a little Christmas spiel, but this time I think I’ll skip that – but I will link you to this beautiful advent him (Lo! He Comes with Clouds Descending). We sang it at church a couple of weeks ago, and I love it! This version is a bit on the slow side but seems quite appropriate for this time of year.

(Oh, and one last thing: quick car update – still not fixed. Hopefully next Wednesday But I’m not too worried about it too much over the next few days, I don’t think anything is seriously wrong, it just needs the dealership to take a look at it.)

  • Day 119: It’s Only Just Begun…

Sam the Snowman is relishing the future – he’s taking his time browsing his Christmas cards, and is about to open up some presents (behind him, although you can’t really see. But they’re there. No, seriously, I just forgot to include them in the picture. Doh!)

  • Day 118: Everybody’s Having Fun

Today’s Slade lyric is: “So here it is, Merry Christmas, everybody’s having fun”. Well those birds look like they’re having fun, to an extent, and it is a white Christmas… OK, so that was a slightly tenuous link, but I just liked that photo 🙂
