  • St Botolph’s Priory

Today’s photo comes from what is, I believe, one of the overlooked treasures of Colchester: St Botolph’s Priory. It’s an 11th Century Benedictine priory (the remaining walls are apparently 12th century). I honestly can’t believe people just walk past it without giving it a second glance! The building, despite being a ruin, still has a kind of presence which is difficult to define.

I think it is a beautiful place to take photos. Unfortunately I only had my phone camera with me today, but I’m definitely going to return there and take more photos at some point. (Probably several points, if I’m honest!) Particularly if I do end up getting a better camera, I think you could take some brilliant photos there.

Anyway, I think this is just about my favourite of the photos I took today. There’s something about the shadows and light on the grass. And actually I think the phone camera does kind of lend it a slightly surreal, magical quality which fits with the priory somehow. Unfortunately the pillar on the right hand side did get in the way a little, I was going to crop the photo down but that didn’t really work!

  • Black and White Leaf

Today’s photo was taken at lunchtime. I thought the photo was OK to start with but could be improved with a little bit of messing around! So I’ve made the leaf colour and the background black and white. (Well, technically the leaf has sort of a gradient fill which means it goes more black and white at the back but still).

I think this one worked surprisingly well, but see what you think!

Tonight we’re at 21, as per usual, so that will be fun! Um, that’s all from me…

  • Piano Keys

I swear I took this photo before seeing alex’s photo for today! It’s a close-up shot of some piano keys. I know this is a bit of a cliche, but still… I quite like those kind of pictures 🙂 If I was actually artistic I’d be able to find some way of making it fresh, but still.

Unfortunately it was pouring down with rain this lunchtime so I wasn’t able to get out to take photos. I suspect over the winter months I’ll have to find more ways of taking photos inside… I’m sure it won’t be all that bad. What I’m learning is, with a bit of imagination mundane things can actually become quite interesting.

But anyway. I should note I think this is my 30th photo, yay! I was going to post up a bit of a round-up, but it’s getting a bit late so I won’t do that just now. Maybe tomorrow.

  • Red Berries

Today’s picture is of some red berries on … well, I don’t know what kind of plant it is. Or what kind of berries they are. I just know that I quite like the photo.

Apart from that, not much else to say today really! The meeting with the DDO went well last night, I’ve got quite a lot of things to be doing but I’ve known that before.

Things will hopefully quieten down a bit in November, but until then I think I’m going to be flat out preparing talks and the like! I hope I’ll still have time to do this photo blog though, I’m enjoying it so far (even if it’s sometimes a bit of a struggle to find time to do photos…)

  • More fields, sky etc

Today’s picture is very similar to one which I took a week or two ago (and yesterday’s, in fact, although the weather was much different!). This one was taken from a different angle, still the same field though. I took a couple of others I was quite pleased with though – this one I quite liked, and I was also happy with this one.

Anyway, not much else to report for today. I’m going to go and make some dinner, and then I’m off to see the DDO (Diocesan Director of Ordinands) for the first time in a few months – he’s been on sabbatical. That’s all from me for now.

Oh, I’ve just realised this is the third post I’ve started with ‘More fields’… will bear that in mind and not do that again tomorrow. Even if it is another fields photo 😉

  • More fields! Wahey!

Quick post today. This is a shot taken at lunchtime. Unfortunately the sky wasn’t too interesting, but at least it wasn’t completely grey like it has been!

I spent most of today battling Eclipse and GWT which had very helpfully decided they didn’t want to work for me. Like I said on Twitter, what did people used to get frustrated at before computers?!

Anyway, seems to be sorted now, so hopefully the rest of the week will be better!

  • More Fields

The photo today was taken before church. Unfortunately the sky was grey which isn’t particularly great for photos. I think this kind of works as a photo in sepia though, it seems to enhance the loneliness and desolation of the photo. (Isolation? Desolation? It’s really not that bad! But still.)

Anyway, hope you enjoy. I’ll try and post up a more positive photo tomorrow!

This might be as good a time as any to do another quick weekend update. On Friday night, we had 21 as per usual. Then yesterday, after the preacher’s day we (as in Phil and I) went round to Chelmsford for Rich’s housewarming party. It was really good, nice to catch up with him and see a few other people we hadn’t seen in a while (plus meet a few new ones!)

Today we had church in the morning, and then afterwards Alex popped round for a cup of tea which was really nice. Then we went round to our home group leader’s house for afternoon tea with some other members of our home group – it was a lovely afternoon! Just chatting and having a good time, very relaxing.

Then we went to Sunday@6. And that’s pretty much it! I think now we’re going to finish off watching “The Matrix Dezionized”, which I might have mentioned before. (I definitely have on Twitter…) I’ll let you know how that goes. All for now.

  • Preacher’s Day

Today I was at a preacher’s day at Fordham, run by the Proclamation Trust. Adrian Reynolds was leading the day, which was about preaching Old Testament prophecy, taking us through the first chapter or so of Malachi as an example.

Anne-Marie came as well, and I think we both enjoyed it! Old Testament prophecy is something I’ve always found quite difficult, so I found the day really useful. I’ll post up some of what I learned from it over the next few days.

Anyway, at lunchtime I wandered round and took a few photos. Today’s photos is one of them… unfortunately I couldn’t get many good shots of the church because of the builders fencing up around it! Still, it was a beautiful day so it was worth taking a few.

  • Leaf, Shed…

Not so happy with today’s photo but it was taken in the two seconds I had between coming in from work and going out again to club!

The leaf in the foreground is from our plum tree, which we had several plums from this year. (Hey, it’s only a small one…)

Um, not much else to say really. So I’ll leave it there :p

  • Leaves, Reflections and stuff

You know what the hardest part of this photo challenge is? Finding a bloody name for each picture! Especially when your subject matter is similar.

I guess it wouldn’t matter too much to re-use them, but … I don’t know, it doesn’t really matter.

Anyway! Today’s picture was taken in a little woods close to where I work. I quite like the way the light was reflecting off the leaves on the ground. I don’t think I was able to capture it very well with the camera, but it turned out surprisingly well.
