  • The weekend, and blogs

Firstly, just a quick note about the blog: the blog system itself is virtually finished 🙂 There are still some features that I’d like to add (for example, templates which aren’t coded in PHP), and perhaps some form of administration system (just something to collect all the little bits and pieces together), but apart from that I’m quite happy.

Like I said previously — if you would like a copy of the blog system, then let me know! I might write up some documentation and stuff, especially if I make it a bit easier to install, but if you’d like to “pre-order” your (free) copy then get in touch 🙂

Now, the weekend. I went up to Colchester on Saturday afternoon, to see Philippa. In the evening we went out for a meal to Toto’s, in Colchester. It was very nice! Although the minestrone soup we had for starter was very filling, I couldn’t manage all of my main course. Then we went to Waffles for the rest of the evening and had some cocktails (mmm… cocktails… nice!)

On Sunday, we went to the chaplaincy service. Then Philippa went to her choir rehearsal and I went round to Anne-Marie and Esther’s to play ‘Scategories’ (I’m not sure how you’re supposed to spell it) with Phil P, Phil B, and Alex as well as Anne-Marie and Esther. Afterwards me, Phil P and Alex went back to Claremont Road, and we had an evening just chatting and watching some episodes of ‘Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)’. I have to say it was a rather strange series, but quite funny in places 🙂

And, then I came home, and went to work today… it’s an exciting life I lead! I’d better be off to bed… night all!

  • A very nearly fully functional site!

Well, this site is very nearly past its “test” status… I’ve pretty much finished the blog system for now. It’s got as many features as I want it to have… obviously that’s not a huge number, but still!

All I have to do now is the right hand menu bar and the photos section. The right hand menu bar – piece of cake. The photos section I’m not looking forward to at all…

  • Oracle CM SDK…

… takes a long time to install! I’ve been setting up an ‘Oracle CM SDK Domain’ for a while now… I think everything Oracle takes a long time, especially when you’re running on an old Pentium III Xeon (550 MHz).

And after this post, things will start becoming archived…

Incidentally, if you want a blog system that’s written in PHP, drop me a line. If I get enough interest, I’ll add some more features 🙂 At the moment it’s fairly basic, but I prefer it to blogger (because at least on your own server you’re not going to have 99% downtime like Blogger seem to have. Ok, that’s probably a bit unfair, but I just prefer to run things on my own server with my own code… and also I prefer the XML way to their template way, which is very inefficient! – This way, you can change the templates without having to republish the entire site. Handy. Although it requires PHP, a lot of websites have that these days. Anyway…)

  • Adding Another Blog Entry…

I’m just adding another blog entry to test the archive functionality. Incidentally, I’ll have to code ‘recent updates’ and ‘archives’ on the right hand side… make them actually work!

I don’t know whether I’ll leave these initial posts up here when I actually transfer the blog across… not that it really matters. I just want to fill up space for the time being 🙂

  • That’s weird!

I made a post saying that I’d written an archive system, then I made a post shortly afterwards with the URL… the first post disappeared. That’s strange. I think it’s because the filenames of the XML files I use are based on the time, and the time only has an accuracy down to a minute (I don’t use seconds as well, seemed a bit pointless). That does mean, however, that I can’t make two posts in the same minute because the second post will overwrite the first. The number of occasions I think I’d need to make two posts in a minute, however, are — well, zero. So that’s OK 🙂

  • Incidentally…

There aren’t any blog archives at the moment, but after a few posts (when there are archives) they’ll be available on this page.

  • Working on new site!

I’ve been working on my new site a bit… I’ve completed the first step of the new blog system: I can now add blog entries and read them on the front page. It looks pretty similar to blogger. Definitely not as many features, but still! I just need to sort out the archiving now (great)… as well as a couple of problems. Ah well.

Feel free to take a look if you want to keep up to date with my progress (why you would want to, I don’t know…)

  • New Blog System!

I’m just testing out a new blog system of mine I’ve written which is based on XML. The only trouble I’ve had with it is, I think Openhosting, my hosts, are using an old version of PHP. This means that I’ve had to change a few things in order for it to work here… it’s not ideal, but at least it works.

    Hopefully.

All I have to do now is get the archiving working (not an insignificant task, I might add. Ah well.)

  • What to do with fox hunting?

Well, now that fox hunting has been (or will be – I’m not sure when it came or comes into effect) banned, I was wondering what they’re going to do now… obviously such a hunting ban is quite difficult to enforce, so some of them may continue to hunt anyway. However, I have another suggestion:

Instead of hunting foxes, why not hunt the paparazzi? So admittedly hunting paparazzi is probably illegal, but so is hunting foxes so you’re taking an equal risk! And the reward is far greater.

Foxes aren’t really a pest anymore, they don’t need much controlling — why not change the target of the hunt to a real pest? These paparazzi making lives hell for some people.

Do your bit for the hunt today: change the target of the hunt to paparazzi. When the law enforcement officials come round, you’ll even have the excuse that you’re doing something useful…

  • Nothing’s happening…

Um, it’s pointless posting up anything here because – well, nothing’s happened! I just wanted to let you know that 🙂

This might be my last post here before the weekend considering that nothing exciting is planned for the rest of the week. So feel priveliged. Or something…
